Dover collaboration brings Halloween costume options with a vintage feel

Tina’s Timeless Threads partnering with Actors Attic owner for pop-up shop

DOVER — Those wishing to go back in time for their Halloween costumes, while supporting a local small business, should head to downtown Dover.

Tina Hudson-Beamer of Tina’s Timeless Threads has partnered with Susan Betts of Actors Attic to create a Halloween costume shop at her store at 111 W. Loockerman St.

Ms. Betts, who was forced to shutter the well-known costume side of her business in 2020 due to challenges with COVID-19, approached Ms. Hudson-Beamer with the idea.

“When Sue, from Actors Attic, went out of business, she reached out to me,” Ms. Hudson-Beamer said. “I purchased a lot of her vintage pieces. She had been in business for over 40 years here in Delaware. It was sad to see her go.”

The owner of the vintage store, being a Halloween lover, thinks the collaboration is a perfect fit.

“When I make costumes, I like to take regular clothing and add to it,” Ms. Hudson-Beamer said.

The pop-up provides customers with the opportunity to do just that.

The shop has plenty of examples on display. Using Halloween costume accessories and her vintage pieces, Ms. Hudson-Beamer created three looks — Sandy from the musical, “Grease,” an elegant vampire and Wednesday Addams.

“(The Wednesday Addams look) is just a simple dress that you make into a costume and, after, wear it as a normal dress. Everyone needs a black dress,” she said.

The costumes chosen for the pop-up store were also selected to complement Tina’s Timeless Threads’ regular inventory.

“We aren’t doing horror. No scary masks or makeup,” Ms. Hudson-Beamer said.

The costume wall is filled with outfits from many different eras — 1920s flapper, 1970s disco dancer, 1980s metal band rocker. The store also has plenty of wigs, sunglasses and masquerade masks.

“They are all really popular, especially the pimp costumes,” she said, laughing while straightening a red cape with a white tiger-striped lining on a mannequin that was also wearing a red suit with similar details.

“Everything is reasonably priced, too,” Ms. Hudson-Beamer said. Some of the accessory pieces start at just a few dollars, while the “costume-in-a-bag” options are about $25 to $50.

The Tina’s Timeless Threads and Actors Attic Halloween Pop-up Shop will be available through October. The store is open weekdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit here to learn more.
