TOWNSEND - Doris Ann Simmons, 79, of Townsend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. Born on Aug. 13, 1932, in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late Eva Mae (Simpson) and John Wesley Jester Sr. For many years, Doris worked at Harris Manufacturing as a seamstress. She loved to cook and bake and always prepared enough food to feed everyone. When her health permitted she raised chickens and especially enjoyed visiting with the locals whenever they stopped by her residence to purchase their fresh eggs. Doris was a wonderful mom and grandmother and dearly loved her family and friends. Her delightful sense of humor and kindness will be missed by many. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ralph B. "Dick" Simmons; a sister, Ruby Cloak; and two brothers, John "Buster" and Tommy Jester. She leaves many wonderful memories to her daughter, Wanda Coker and her husband, Gary of Smyrna; two sons, Phil Simmons and his wife, Ida of Clayton and Chuck Simmons and his companion, Anita of Townsend; three sisters, Libby Clough, Shirley Sapp, and June Reynolds; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, as well as many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at Townsend Cemetery, where Doris will be laid to rest beside her loving husband. At the families' request, memorial contributions can be made to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 in appreciation for the wonderful care Mrs. Simmons received.
