Delaware environmental officials to host hearing on horseshoe crab population changes

The public is invited to join the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for a virtual hearing conducted by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 8.

The event will gather public input on the commission’s Horseshoe Crab Draft Addendum VIII, which considers allowing changes in annual bait harvest specifications for Delaware Bay-origin horseshoe crabs. Delaware is a member state of the commission.

The proposed revisions utilize the best-available science and include improvements to population models for horseshoe crabs and red knots. They also incorporate more sources of horseshoe crab-removal data, including mortality due to the biomedical industry and commercial discards from other fisheries.

The goal is an ecosystem-based approach to manage the Delaware Bay horseshoe crab population to ensure enough eggs support the migratory red knots during their annual spring stopover.

Information about the hearing is available here.
