For the sixth straight year, Delmar High’s field hockey team finished the season hoisting a state championship trophy this past fall.
St. Mark’s High current streak of two straight DIAA state titles isn’t quite as long but the Spartans, under coach Nancy Griskowitz, have been pretty dominant in their own right.
That’s why both are being honored by the Delaware Sportswriters & Broadcasters Association.
Delmar has been voted the Team of the Year for 2021 while Griskowitz won the Tubby Raymond Coach of the Year award. They will be honored at the DSBA’s annual luncheon on Presidents Day, Feb. 21.
Delmar went 19-0 and captured its sixth straight state crown — the last five in Division II.
The Wildcats, who also beat Division I state champion Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference championship game, out-scored their opponents by a combined 162-4 and posted 15 shutouts, including three in the state tournament. The squad featured seven players on the All-State first or second teams.
Those stats helped Delmar earn a No. 2 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region and No. 8 in the nation by MaxFieldHockey.com The Wildcats have won 96 straight games since 2016.
Under Griskowitz, St. Mark’s won its second volleyball state championship in a row and ran its winning streak to 33 straight matches. The Spartans had three players named first-team All-State.
In 24 seasons at her alma mater, Griskowitz has led St. Mark’s to eight state championships with two runnerup finishes.
