DOVER — Something about September must have suited Firefly Music Festival organizers because they are doing it again next year.
Officials announced in a video posted on the festival's website and social media channels Wednesday morning that next year’s 10th-anniversary event in the Woodlands of Dover will take place Sept. 22-25.
Mostly due to the pandemic, this year’s festival took place in September for the first time in its history.
Officials said the 2021 festival drew 50,000 spectators. Headliners included Billie Eilish, The Killers, Tame Impala, Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Cage the Elephant and Machine Gun Kelly.
All previous Firefly Music Festivals had taken place in June or July before this year.
Keeping Firefly in September drew a mixed reaction on the festival’s Facebook page.
“I’ve loved going to Firefly since 2013, but September Firefly was cold, wet and just at a bad time of year. So sad, gonna probably have to make the switch to (Bonnaroo),” said Jennifer Saywer.
“This year it only rained the first evening and the rest of the weekend was actually perfect! No humidity either,” replied Nina Carmen Borgeson.
“I agree it was so cold by the end of the night I had to buy pants the first night and a hoodie because I didn’t wanna walk back to camp freezing,” said Haven Knight.
Matthew Grossman was a fan of the temperatures.
“That’s gonna be awesome again with the cooler weather,” he wrote.
Some hoped it would return to the summer months.
“So disappointed that it’s not in June when it’s always been until 2021 — especially for the 10th anniversary! It’s been my summer tradition since the beginning,” wrote Kimberly Zandy.
When asked at the end of this year’s festival about keeping the event in September, festival organizer Stephanie Mezzano said, “Despite a bit of severe weather in the area Thursday, the new September weekend treated us very well. Determinations on the weekend Firefly will happen in 2022 are still to come.”
No other information concerning next year’s Firefly was released on Wednesday.
