Delaware State University to hold observatory open house Saturday

DOVER — Delaware State University’s Astronomical Observatory will hold an open house beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, during which the public will be able to view the far reaches of outer space.

The event is free and open to the public. It will begin with a presentation in Room 223 of the Luna I. Mishoe Science Center-South. As darkness descends, attendees will be able to climb up to the observatory and, weather permitting, look through the telescope.

The facility has a 14-inch Meade reflecting telescope that enables view of sites as far as Jupiter and its moons, Saturn and its rings, and craters on the moon, as well as a host of other celestial objects.

While the presentation will be accessible to all via an elevator, note that climbing stairs will be necessary to reach the telescope.

In the event cloud cover prevents the telescope viewing portion, participants will still be taken up to the observatory, where they can learn about the telescope.

Those interested in attending must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within seven days of the event or have proof of vaccination. All attendees must wear masks.

Parking will be available in Lot 12, between the John R. Price Building and the Mishoe Science Center.
