Delaware State University Expression Contest participants celebrated

DOVER — The Delaware State University Downtown Black History Month Expression Contest recently honored 25 students from Dover High School for their artistic work.

Each participant was asked to create an expression of gratitude (essay, poetry, video, artwork) toward a Black person who has inspired his or her life.

While some students selected famous artists, many shared how their friends, parents, grandparents and other family members impacted them through personal struggles.

DSU continues to play a major role in ensuring that Black history instruction is included in school districts throughout the state. Through the contest, DSU provided Capital School District students opportunities to use their creative expression to honor African Americans who have made impacts in their lives.

The contest partnered with The House of Coffi and the Dover Public Library to display the entries. The works can be viewed from noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays in the teen section of the library or at The House of Coffi daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
