DOVER — Delaware State University’s Dr. Cherese Winstead Casson, dean of the school’s College of Agriculture, Science and Technology and a chemistry professor, has been appointed as a member of the President’s Committee on the National Medal of Science.
The committee evaluates the nominees for the National Medal of Science, a presidential award that recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions in the physical, biological, mathematical and engineering sectors, as well as the social and behavioral sciences fields.
Prior to becoming dean, Dr. Winstead Casson was the chair of the Department of Chemistry. Under her leadership, DSU is moving toward the construction of a building for its Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources.
She is a member of the NASA Delaware Space Grant Consortium, The Delaware Comprehensive Sickle Cell Research Program, the Materials Research Society, the American Chemical Society and the Delaware Science Coalition.
Additionally, Dr. Winstead Casson is the founder and president of the Young Chemists Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the early education of underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
She has been a DSU faculty member since 2008.
Since its establishment, the National Medal of Science has been awarded to 506 scientists and engineers whose careers spanned decades of research and development.
