Delaware state parks on track to set another visitation record

State parks are on track to set another visitation record this year, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced Friday, according to sales of annual passes.

Last year was already a record-breaking year for the passes, which allow daily entry into state parks, according to a department press release. More than 61,000 passes sold by that year DNREC’s Parks and Recreation division, compared to more than 47,000 sold in 2019, before the pandemic.

As of April 30 this year, 39,959 annual passes have been sold, compared to 39,568 passes by the same date in 2021. That’s all the more remarkable considering 2022 annual pass sales began in February — two months later than normal — due to supply chain issues.

Delaware’s 17 state parks and Brandywine Zoo have seen a 30% increase in visitation over the last five years and a 78% increase over the past decade.

“The incredible interest our Delaware State Parks have experienced since the start of the pandemic is here to stay. Like never before, the public recognizes the many benefits the nation’s best state parks offer for our health and wellbeing,” said DNREC Secretary M. Shawn Garvin. “I am incredibly proud of how our parks staff continues to meet the challenges that come with increased demand and usage of all our venues and amenities.”
