WILMINGTON — Fifth-seeded Delaware Military built a six-run lead before downing No. 10 Appoquinimink, 9-5, in the DIAA baseball state championship game at Frawley Stadium on Monday night.
The state title was the first for the Seahawks (20-3) in baseball in the 18-year-old Wilmington school’s history. DMA is the fifth different school to win the state baseball crown in the last five seasons.
The Seahawks avenged a 5-3 loss to the Jaguars (16-6) earlier this season.
DMA, which never trailed after scoring twice in the first inning, went up 8-2 after tallying three runs in both the third and fourth.
Appo, which was trying to win its third state title since 2015, rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to close within 8-5. But the Seahawks got a run back in the bottom of the inning before reliever Drew Simpson retired the side in order in the top of the seventh.
DMA’s players piled on top of each other in front of the mound after Simpson got a strikeout to end the game. The Seahawks beat a pair of Henlopen Conference teams — Sussex Academy and Dover — in their first two state tourney games this year.
