WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Now in the stretch run of the regular season, Delaware knows it needs to start stringing together some victories.
On Saturday, the Blue Hens made it three wins in a row with a 73-69 victory over William & Mary in CAA men’s basketball at Kaplan Arena.
Kevin Anderson and Jyare Davis each finished with 16 points to lead Delaware (10-5 CAA, 19-9 overall), which won its fourth consecutive road game. Jameer Nelson Jr. added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Ryan Allen also reached double figures with 12 points.
“This was a group effort to pick up a big road win,” said Blue Hens coach Martin Ingelsby. “We dug in on the defensive end and made big plays when we needed to.
“Jameer and Andrew (Carr) hit huge threes, and we guarded well down the stretch. We tried to go inside and use our physicality in the second half. This is a really good win on the road.”
Delaware, which stayed in fourth place in the CAA standings, led by only a point after the Tribe’s Julian Lewis knocked down a three-pointer with five minutes left. But Nelson hit three free throws and then knocked down a stepback three to make it a 66-60 game at the 1:44 mark.
William & Mary (4-12 CAA, 5-24 overall) closed within two in the final minute when Anderson fired a long inbounds pass to Nelson for a dunk to put the Blue Hens up 70-66 with 15 seconds left. Tyler Rice answered with one free throw for the Tribe, but Anderson was then fouled and knocked down a pair of shots from the foul line with eight seconds left to seal the win.
Delaware shot just 40.7 percent from the floor, but buried 10 three-pointers and went 15-of-21 from the foul line.
The Blue Hens jumped out to an 18-11 lead eight and a half minutes into the game, while a Davis layup put Delaware up 32-26 with 3:14 on the clock.
However, William & Mary scored the final eight points of the half, including a Yuri Covington three-pointer in the final seconds, to take a 34-32 advantage into the break.
The Tribe was up 44-38 early in the second half before Delaware went on a nine-point spurt to take a 47-44 lead at the 14:41 mark. Anderson drilled a three-pointer to put the Hens up 52-49 but Delaaware then went scoreless for over six minutes, allowing William & Mary to go back in front.
Carr’s three-pointer at the 6:24 mark broke a 54-54 tie, and Delaware led the rest of the way.
