The Criminal Legal System Imposed Debt Study Group’s inaugural meeting will take place virtually at 10 a.m. Jan. 3, 2023.

Created by legislation during the 151st General Assembly, the committee will review the impact of court-imposed financial obligations and make recommendations to promote fairness and transparency in that process.

The group’s co-chairs, Rep. Sean Lynn, D-Dover, and Sen. Darius Brown, D-Wilmington, are scheduled to give an overview of its goals at the meeting, which will also feature presentations from Priya Sarathy Jones of the Fines & Fees Justice Center and committee member Meryem Dede of the Campaign to End Debtors’ Prisons. Their remarks will be focused on court fines and fees at both the national and local levels.

Following a group discussion, there will be opportunity for public comment.
