KENT, Ohio - David W, Meredith, emeritus professor, formerly of Cambridge, died March 27, 2008.
A specialist in English literature, he taught at Kent State University from 1976 until his retirement in 1989. He was active in Kent State's professorial exchange program, teaching at Karl Marx University in Leipzig, Germany, and at Aristotle University in Thessalonika, Greece. He also served as Assistant Chair of the Department of English, and as a member of the faculty senate.
He was a published author and poet. After his retirement he continued his academic studies and poetry writing, and began an extensive genealogy research of several Eastern Shore families.
Dr. Meredith was preceded in death by his parents, Isidor L. and Lena T. Meredith, and by a sister, Nancy K. Isner.
He is survived by one sister, Willamae Sherman, and her husband, Donald, of Salisbury; nephews, J. Mark Kirchgasser III of Media, Pa., Thomas M. Kirchgasser of Old Lyme, Conn., Evan P. Williams of Glen, N.H., and David S. Sherman of Harrington, Del., and nieces, Laura E. Anderson of Salisbury and Anne K. Blythe of West Chester, Pa., and their families. He also leaves behind many friends who will remember him for his intellectual curiosity and his generous spirit.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on May 3 at the Robbins Heritage Center on Greenway Drive in Cambridge. Friends and family will be welcomed.
