HARRINGTON - Daniel V. McLaughlin passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial. He was born to the late Joseph Patrick and Mary McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin retired in 1979 from the United States Air Force after serving 28 years in the service. He attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and was the chief over materials and supplies at the Dover Air Force Base. After his retirement, he continued to work in civil service for a number of years until the late 90's. From that point forward, he went to work for Wal-Mart. He became well known in Wal-Mart as someone who always greeted you and asked if you needed help. He became known as the "little man from Wal-Mart". Although he was quite the workaholic, Mr. McLaughlin loved to listen to Irish music, and watch game shows and the Bill O'Reilly show. He loved to spoil his grandchildren and sneak them candy whenever he could. He himself had quite the sweet tooth, and his wife Karen, had to bake him a cake every Sunday as well as various other sweets to hold him over all week until the following Sunday. Mr. McLaughlin will be remembered as a good man; one who was dedicated and loyal. His family meant the world to him. He never met a stranger and his outgoing personality will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Patrick; and a sister, Nellie. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Karen McLaughlin of Harrington; son, Danny McLaughlin of Harrington; daughters, Kathleen Laughman of Magnolia, Noreen Giuttari of Bowers Beach, and Kristen McLaughlin of Camden; sisters, Ann Eagan of Pennsylvania, Frances Simons of Michigan, and Elizabeth Reagan of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Service will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.
