Cora May Phillips, 98
CAMBRIDGE - Cora May Phillips, 98, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
She was born on March 31, 1909 and was a daughter of the late Charles Ross and Sadie Martha Parks Schaffer.
She attended schools in Baltimore. On Feb. 1, 1930 she was married to Levi B. Phillips Jr. Mr. Phillips passed away on Dec. 4, 1977.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Cambridge Woman's Club, Cambridge Country Club, Cambridge Yacht Club, Dorchester Garden Club, Dorchester County Historical Society, Dorchester General Auxiliary, the Quota Club and had been instrumental in getting the Grand National started.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge where she had been a member of the Senior Choir. For many years Mrs. Phillips was well known in the area for her singing. She had also been instrumental in the construction of the Harbor Haven condominium complex.
She had been in failing health for several months when she passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center on Thursday evening.
Survivors include three daughters, Cora Lee Mowbray, Priscilla P. Khewis and Joyce P. Hess, all of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Allen P. Mowbray of Queenstown, Deborah L. Hill of Easton, Cynthia Lee Outen of Gloucester, Va., Benjamin Monroe Horney of Tuscon, Ariz., Mark Bradley Hess of Cambridge and Jason Erik Hess of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Lee Fisher, Hannah Lee Mowbray, Daniel Phillips Mowbray, Henry Mowbray, Charles Mowbray, Rachael Horney and Anthony Horney and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Lee LeCompte, Bonnie Schaffer and Catherine Corozzo.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Ronald Meredith officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Dorchester County Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to one's favorite charity.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald L. Horney and Asbury Jones. Active pallbearers will be Mark Bradley Hess, Jason Erik Hess, David Hill, Benjamin M. Horney, Allen P. Mowbray and Edward Outen.
