WILMINGTON — The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with West Side Grows Together and the Friends of Cool Spring Park, held a grand opening of a state-of-the-art playground in the park Thursday.
The equipment is designed for people of all ages and abilities and includes a fitness area for adults, apparatus for the disabled, swings, slides and an explorer dome. The existing playground was dilapidated, outdated and occasionally dangerous, and FOCSP has advocated for infrastructure improvements for decades.
Along with support from the city and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, FOCSP hired landscape architects to develop the playground design in 2017. In 2020, the green stormwater portion of the project was completed, and last fall, the initiative was fully finished.
