College Roundup: Marrs strikes out 14 as Wolverines defeat St. Mary’s 8-3

Alex Marrs struck out a career-high 14 to pace Wesley College to an 8-3 win over St. Mary’s in Capital Athletic Conference baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

Marrs walked only one batter while giving up three runs and nine hits in eight innings to earn his CAC-leading fifth win of the season.

The Wolverines (3-4 CAC, 11-6 overall) led 8-0 before the Seahawks scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Cody Simet blanked St. Mary’s in the ninth.

Mike Calvarese went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Chris Seibert went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI for Wesley. Trey Mears (Sussex Central) knocked in two runs and stole two bases in the win.

Navy 18, Delaware State 0: The Midshipmen out-hit the Hornets, 27-4, in posting the one-sided nonconference victory.

Darnell Maisonet, Ciaran Devenney, Todd Henry and Adrian Hill (Polytech) all had hits for DelState.

Lacrosse

MEN, Mary Washington 16, Wesley 5: Josh Wassum tallied two goals for the Wolverines in the Capital Athletic Conference loss.

Leo Kelly, Hunter Coho and Zach Weitzel each added a goal for Wesley (0-2 CAC, 4-6 overall). Nate Gemmato had an assist, scooped up six ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Goalie James Cella registered 15 saves.

WOMEN, Mary Washington 17, Wesley 1: Maddison Cypher netted the lone Wolverine goal with 15:44 remaining in the second half off an assist by Kathleen Martin.

Paige Brehm corralled five draws while Fallon Fore picked up four ground balls. Shelby Schirmer stopped six shots in goal for the Wolverines (0-2, 5-2).
