College roundup: Hornets, Hens both post wins in basaeball

Delaware State took the nightcap, 9-7, to split a MEAC baseball doubleheader with Norfolk State Saturday.

The Spartans won the opener, 4-3. The Hornets (5-6 MEAC, 8-12 overall) have won two of the first three games in the weekend series.

In the second game, DelState used a six-run fourth to build an 8-2 lead before holding off Norfolk State. Evan Harris had a total of four RBI in the twinbill while Miguel Rivera (Polytech) had two RBI and Alec Rodriguez (Dover) had two hits in the nightcap.

The Hornets took advantage of 14 walks.

Rivera had two hits and scored twice in the opener.

Delaware 4, Towson 1: Joey Silan allowed just one hit and struck out seven in six scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the year as the Blue Hens (3-2 CAA, 14-10 overall) won their fourth in a row.

Dom Velazquez (Dover) earned the save after scattering four hits and striking out five during the final three frames.

Dunion finished 4-for-4, while Bryce Greenly (Milford) added three hits and Jordan Hutchins (Dover) contributed two.

Softball

Blue Hens earn sweep: Delaware swept Elon, 6-5 and 9-3, in a doubleheader to improve to 3-2 in the CAA, 19-11 overall.

In the opener, Sarah Bessel scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Blue Hens earned a walkoff win. Graceyn Frost picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Hens took advantage of eight walks as they scored nine runs on just seven hits.

Frost won her second game of the day after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits over four innings. Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) and Halle Kisamore each had two hits and drove in two runs.

DSU drops two: Delaware State lost a MEAC twinbill, 10-6 and 12-6, at North Carolina Central.

Jole Raybourn had three RBI in game two, while Jonah Cunnigan was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in game two for the Hornets (2-6 MEAC, 3-20 overall).

Lacrosse

MEN, Massachusetts 11, Delaware 10, OT: The Blue Hens couldn’t hold on to a 9-4 halftime lead before falling to the Minutemen in overtime in their CAA opener.

Delaware (6-4) tied the game at 10-10 with 8:47 remaining in regulation. Cam Acchione, Tye Kurtz, and Mike Robinson all had two goals apiece for the Hens.

WOMEN, Liberty 22, Delaware State 5: Mica Lambert and Mayerlin Santos tallied two goals each, while Dasia McQueen scored the other goal for the Hornets (1-9) in the loss.
