Lane DeLeon tossed six strong innings as the Delaware State baseball team earned a 2-0 victory over University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a MidEastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

DeLeon allowed just two hits before Terry Godfrey and Darien Ragins took over for the final three innings of the shutout. The Hornets scored their only two runs in the top of the eighth which gave the win to Godfrey.

Darnell Maisonet had the game-winning two-RBI double for DSU..

Delaware splits with Tribe: Behind three home runs and 11 hits, the Blue Hens defeated William & Mary 8-5 in the second game on Saturday.

The win earned Delaware a split of Saturday’s doubleheader as William & Mary captured the opener by an 8-2 score.

Doug Trimble went 3-for-4 in the Delaware victory while Nick Patten drove in a pair of runs. Dover High grad Nick Spadafino started and struck out five in four innings.

Jeremy Ake and Calvin Scott paced the Hens in the first game, each going 2-for-4.

Wesley drops a pair: Mary Washington walked off in the opener of the doubleheader, 7-6, before defeating the Wolverines 15-6 in the second game.

Trey Mears collected the 200th hit of his Wesley career on the day. Mears went 3-for-4 in the opener before getting another two hits in the next game and scoring a pair of runs.

The Wolverines fell to 12-11 overall and 4-8 in the CAC.

Lacrosse

MEN, Massachusetts 9, Delaware 6: The Blue Hens held the lead early in the fourth quarter, but a tough day at the faceoff circle and seven penalties proved to be Delaware’s undoing.

Delaware (7-4, 0-1 CAA), which was coming off a win over No. 1 Rutgers last Saturday, could not continue the momentum as Massachusetts scored the final four goals of the game,

The Hens, who got two goals from senior Steve DeLargy and a goal and three assists from Andrew Romagnoli, had beaten Massachusetts (4-5, 1-0 CAA) each of the past three seasons. Delaware goalkeeper Matt DeLuca stopped nine shots and lost for just the second time in eight starts this season.

The Minutemen, who have had each of their last five games decided by three goals or less, won 15 of 18 faceoffs and forced 16 turnovers.

Softball

Drexel 9, Delaware 7: Dragon pinch-hitter Jourdan Skirha hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Drexel the dramatic victory.

The Dragons (9-10, 1-3 CAA) trailed by three runs going into the bottom of the seventh before scoring five times to claim the victory. The first two Drexel batters reached on Delaware error.

For the Blue Hens (12-14, 2-2 CAA), Mariah Kondravy finished 4-for-4 with four RBI, while Giovanna Kolofer and Emily Neal added two hits apiece.

Wesley swept by Frostburg State: The Wolverines lost the first game 11-2 and fell 10-2 in the nightcap as they dropped a pair of games to Frostburg State.

Ashley Royer tallied two hits in the opener, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Nina Marcano and Megan DiRubbio both went 1-for-2 while DiRubbio scored once.

Wesley only got one hit in the second game, by Lauren Hoffman.

College track and field

Hens shine at Colonial Relays: The University of Delaware women’s outdoor track & field squad closed out action at the Colonial Relays at William & Mary Saturday with two first place finishes, five other top 10 showings, and three ECAC qualifying performances.

Delaware earned 45 team points over the three-day event and placed sixth overall out of 45 schools. Bucknell won the team title with 65 points followed by Norfolk State, Duquesne, host William & Mary, and Rutgers.

Bringing home first place performances for the Blue Hens were senior Jade Francis and sophomore Ashley Bailey. Francis won the shot put with a toss of 41-feet, 9.75 inches while Bailey won the pole vault competition with a career-best, ECAC-qualifying height of 12-5.5.

Also for the Blue Hens, the 4 x 400m relay team of Tyra Reid, London Freeland, Nadia Khoury, and Carly Pettipaw was second with an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:48.54; Rachel Moroknek was third in the pole vault (10-6); the 4 x 800m relay team of Michaela Meyer, Angie Spadaccini, Betsy Erlanger, and Jeanette Bendolph was fifth (9:21.91); the sprint medley relay team of Reid, Freeland, Carolyn Darr, and Pettipaw was fifth (4:04.66); the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Andriene Rose, Isis Pinkney, Haley Berkeley, and Tyler Jackson, was seventh with an ECAC-qualifying time of 47.78; and Nadia Khoury was eighth in the high jump (5-3).
