College Roundup: Delaware baseball team gets by William & Mary

Delaware opened up a five-run lead before holding off William & Mary, 9-8, in CAA baseball Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The win gave the Blue Hens a three-game sweep of the Tribe with all three victories coming by a single run. Delaware has won four in a row overall.

The Hens took the lead for good at 7-4 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. They added two more in the sixth to make it 9-4.

William & Mary answered with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth before falling short.

Four players collected two hits h for Delaware, including Dover High grad Jordan Hutchins (2 runs, 1 RBI), Kevin Mohollen (2 runs, 1 RBI), Joseph Carpenter (1 run, 1 RBI) and Austin Colmery (1 run, 1 RBI). Eight different players drove in a run for the Hens, who had 12 hits in the contest.

Pitcher Brandon Walter (3-4) earned the win after allowing only two earned runs and six hits while striking out six in 6.2 innings.

Norfolk State 9, Delaware State 3: Trailing by two, the Spartans scored eight unanswered runs to take the rubber game of the MEAC North baseball series at Soldier Field.

The Spartans (7-5 MEAC, 11-17 overall) won two of the three series games. The Hornets fell to 10-17 and 5-7.

Norfolk State scored six runs in the eighth to pull ahead 7-3, and added two runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.

The NSU comeback overshadowed a solid pitching performance by Delaware State starter Darnell Maisonet, who allowed five hits and one run while striking out five and walking one before leaving the game with the Hornets ahead 3-1.

Dover’s Small breaks record: Dover High grad Kendall Small, a senior on the Wilmington University baseball team, broke the Wildcats’ all-time hits record on Saturday.

Small collected his 197th career hit in a 10-9 loss to Post on Saturday to surpass Mike Godwin and Jordan Oncay’s mark of 196 set from 2009-12. He set the record on an RBI double.

Another former Senator, Dakota Graham, had three hits in the contest.

Softball

Towson 6, Delaware 4: The Blue Hens mounted a pair of rallies in the final two innings but fell just short as the Tigers won the rubber game of the CAA weekend series.

Trailing 5-1, the Hens (3-6 CAA, 16-20 overall) started their comeback in the bottom of the sixth, when Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) smacked her fifth home run of the season over the fence in right-center. Delaware then loaded the bases with two down following two walks and a hit batter.

But Hanna Garber was retired on a fly out to right.

Halle Kisamore doubled and Brittney Mendoza singled to open the bottom of the seventh, and one out later, both runners crossed the plate when Glanden laced a single to right center. Following a fielder’s choice, Reyna de Jesus walked to put the tying runners on base, but Towson pitcher Sara Johnson struck out Katie Stahre (Lake Forest) to end the game.

Glanden went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Morgan State 8, Delaware State 0: Erica Hawkins and Stephanie Rundlett combined on a three-hit shutout as the Bears completed a three series sweep. The Bears outscored the Hornets 16-0 in the series.

Jade King had a double in the fifth inning for the Hornets’ lone extra base hit in the series.

Women’s lacrosse

Detroit Mercy 20, Delaware State 5: Olivia Summerville led the Hornets with two goals in the Southern Conference loss.

Mia Mosley, Tamrin Swann and Dachelle Johnson also netted DSU goals. Summerville leads the Hornets with 11 goals and 13 points this season.

Golf

UD women top Princeton: The Delaware women’s golf team defeated Princeton, 4.5 to 1.5, Sunday morning to win the Match Madness championship.

Playing on the par-79, 5,827-yard Fox Hollow Golf Club course, three Blue Hens posted victories while the other three halved their matches.

Ariane Klotz recorded a 4&3 victory over Sophie Siminoff, while Valentina Mueller notched a 3&2 win over Annie Kong. Mackenzie Dieter was the third UD player to win her match with a 1 up decision over Maya Walton.
