COACHES: Delaware — Ryan Carty (2-0, 1st season); URI — Jim Fleming (46-59, 11th season overall; 25-58, 9th season at URI).
CAA: Delaware — 0-0; URI — 1-0.
NATIONAL RANKING: Delaware is No. 9, URI is No. 17 in STATS FCS poll.
LAST WEEK: Delaware beat Delaware State, 35-9; URI beat Bryant, 35-21.
SERIES: Delaware leads, 24-11.
LAST MEETING: URI won, 22-15, last year.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: URI coach Jim Fleming on dealing with Delaware QB Nolan Henderson: “A couple years back he came in in a backup role and we chased him all over the place. I said, ‘Let’s hope they go back to the other starter.’ ... The kid’s talented. He’s a major concern from a defensive perspective. He can make the chains move. I think he’s got great movement skills but he’s a good quarterback, too. His eyes are downfield. He’s looking to make some plays. He pulled one out, went to the right, backpedaled and then threw a strike the other day. I’m going, ‘All right,’ it’s going to be a long day.”
KEYS TO THE GAME: Two weeks into the season, Delaware has a batter idea of where it stands. The Blue Hens know their offensive line has to play a lot better, especially facing a URI defense that just posted 10 sacks in a win over Bryant last week. The trouble is, offensive-line improvement can be a gradual thing. ... Delaware has done a good job spreading the ball around offensively so far. Six players have accounted for the Hens’ seven TDs. Presumably opposing defenses can’t focus too much on any one player and somebody like backup tight end Braden Brose can get open for a pair of TD catches like he did last week. ... A series that Delaware once dominated has become a fierce rivalry lately. The Rams have won three of the last five meetings, with the Hens needing triple OT to pull out one of their two victories. So while it may not have the glamour of some of UD’s more traditional rivalries, this could end up being a big game in the Hens’ season.
NOTES: With 38 tackles, linebacker Johnny Buchnanan leads NCAA FCS in the category. ... Marcus Yarns is the Hens’ leading rusher with 99 yards. Of course, 82 of those yards came on one carry last week ... Delaware is only 5-of-24 on third-down conversions, a stat that’s helped a little by the fact it is also 2-of-6 on fourth down. ... Nolan Henderson’s 21 completions last week against DSU were a career high. The Smyrna High grad is 41-of-69 on the season. ... WR Thyrick Pitts has caught a pass in 33 straight games. ... Delaware returns home to host new CAA member Hampton on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Pirates are the second of three current or former MEAC teams the Hens will face this fall.
