DOVER - Clyde A. Simmons, Sr., passed away Sept. 17, 2012. He was born in Virginia to Clyde R. and Eva Simmons, the eldest son of six children. Clyde liked to say life went "full circle." Leaving the family farm, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1946 and had a 20 year career, during which time he rose from a manual Morse code operator to Senior Master Sergeant. In 1967, he opened a State Farm Insurance agency in Dover, and had a successful 25 year career, retiring in 1992. It was at this time, his life came "full circle" when he and his wife Joyce moved to his beloved "Westwind", a 40-acre horse farm in Marydel, Del. Mr. Simmons was active in many organizations including a Cub Scout leader, Little League Baseball coach, on the board of the Delaware Agricultural Museum, a 41-year Kiwanian, and Wesley United Methodist Church member. An avid golfer, one of his most memorable moments was getting a "Hole-in-One" at his home course, Maple Dale Country Club in Dover. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing, and building things including a guitar, 14 foot sailboat, brick barbeque pits, and Adirondack furniture. Clyde is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Joyce Simmons of Middletown; his sons, Bob Simmons of Dover, and Fred Simmons of Aberdeen, Md; his daughter, June Simmons Craig of Smyrna; his step-daughter, Lisa Collins Shepherd of Ellicott City, Md; and step-sons, Chuck Collins of Horsham, Pa., and Curt Collins of Middletown; two brothers, Randy Simmons of Lynchburg, Va., and Ben Simmons of Navota, Calif.; a sister, June Weeks also of Lynchburg, Va; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
