Christopher Columbus Thompson, 77 LINCOLN - Christopher Columbus Thompson, of Lincoln, passed away on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Milford Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was 77. Chris was baptized and received the Holy Ghost in the Apostolic Faith Church of the Lord Jesus Christ under the late Apostle, Bishop S.C. Johnson. He was a minister of music and continued to play the piano until he became ill. He devoted 36 years as a custodian, serving first the William C. Jason Comprehensive High School and later, Delaware Technical & Community College (Owens Campus), where he served faithfully until his retirement in 1991. Chris earned his high school diploma later in life and proudly attended Delaware Technical & Community College as a business student. "Uncle Baby," as he was affectionately called, always encouraged his numerous nieces and nephews to go on to school to get their education. He was involved in many community activities and was instrumental in the establishment o f the Owens Campus Minority Scholarship Fund. He was never too busy to take an interest in the goals and activities of students, teachers, administrators and co-workers. Chris was inducted into the Owens Campus Hall of Fame in 1997 and honored with an outstanding person plaque in commemoration of his long-term commitment and service to the campus. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother and father, Sadie and Richard Thompson Sr.; a sister, Delilian Alford Weathersby; and two brothers, Winford Thompson and Richard Thompson Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted sister, Edna M. Spence of Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Adeline Thompson of Bridgeville, and Clara Thompson of Milford; one brother-in-law, Elijah Weathersby of Milford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in memory of Chris, designated for the Owens Campus Minority Scholarship Fund, and sent to Delaware Technical & Community College, ATTN: Alison Buckley, P.O. Box 660, Georgetown, DE 19947. Funeral services will be noon Saturday in Clarence Street Church of God, 744 Clarence St., Seaford, where a viewing will be one hour prior. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
