NEWARK — Dr. Dan Shelton, superintendent of the Christina School District, has been named the 2022 Superintendent of the Year for Delaware by The School Superintendents Association (AASA).
AASA advocates for the highest quality public education for all students and develops and supports school system leaders.
“During the 2020-21 school year, Dr. Shelton served as president of the (Delaware) Chief School Officers Association, a department of the Delaware Association of School Administrators,” said Dr. Tammy Croce, executive director of DASA. “His leadership skills served the group well as they navigated the challenges presented during the pandemic. Dr. Shelton is well respected by his peers, as evidenced by his selection as Delaware’s Superintendent of the Year 2021-22.”
The awardee has held many leadership roles and has more than 24 years’ experience as an educator and administrator. In addition, he has served as superintendent for two school districts in the state (Capital and Christina).
“The work of a superintendent is not done in isolation,” Dr. Shelton said. “As a group, the superintendents have always worked together to ensure that we are addressing the needs of all of our students in the state. The last few years, we have really come together and worked collaboratively. In Christina, I could not be more proud of the leadership team we have built and the work that is being done in all of our schools by dedicated individuals who work in and in support of classrooms to ensure that they are meeting the needs of students and families.”
Dr. Shelton has earned several degrees from the University of Delaware, including a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Education and a doctorate of education. He also graduated from the first cohort of the Delaware Academy of School Leadership’s Executive Leadership Academy.
