‘Chickens Go to War’ at Delaware Military Museum

Posted

WILMINGTON — The Duncan Memorial Lecture Series’ “Chickens Go to War” will be held at noon Jan. 14 at the Delaware Military Museum.

The presentation will give a historic perspective on the poultry industry, while sharing the importance of the field to Delmarva today.

For more on the topic, those interested can screen “Your Chicken Has Been to War” here. This 1940s-era unedited film by the Eastern Poultry Institute explains how Delaware chickens went to soldiers overseas during World War II.

The lecture will be presented by Georgie Cartanza, a poultry extension agent for the University of Delaware, who works with poultry farmers, integrators and the public to build awareness about best practices and the impact the industry has on the community through research, outreach and education.

Ms. Cartanza has 27 years’ experience in this field. She has worked for two of the largest integrators on Delmarva and has been a poultry farmer for 17 years, the last seven as an organic producer.

She has received recognition for environmental stewardship from the conservation district, as well as a Governor’s Agricultural and Urban Conservation Award. In 2017, Ms. Cartanza was chosen as the first Nuffield International Farming Scholar from the United States. She has a Bachelor of Science in general agriculture from Delaware State University.

The museum is on 1st Regiment Road, Wilmington.
