He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Dunellon, Fla., to the late Charles Oliver Hughson and Mary Hoskin Hughson Gruener.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Wally loved to tell his friends about his days as a high school sports official in Florida and about his years as a member of the Scottish American Society of Central Florida when he and his wife worked with the Scottish Highland Games.

He was a member of AARP and of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Before his illness he enjoyed getting together with friends and his beloved "donut group."

Mr. Hughson is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Brinsfield Hughson, whom he married on Dec. 30, 1936, in Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Hughson Williams of Thomasville, N.C., and Marilyn Hughson West of Fairview, N.C.; two nephews, Raymond Williams of Thomasville, N.C., Dr. Hugh Tobias of Jacksonville, Fla., and six nieces, Jan Tobias Moore of Ashland, Kan., Deborah Rodenhizer, Marie Williams, Jeanne Oweis, all of Thomasville, N.C., Ruth Parker of Knoxville, Tenn., and Leah Dolan of Fairview, N.C.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Besides, his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hughson Tobias Duncan.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Brookview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Delmer Willey officiating. This was the childhood church of his wife, Betty, and where they had been attending.

Burial at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg.
