SMYRNA - Charles M. Ewing, Jr., better known as "Mack", passed away on Nov. 26, 2013. He was born in Bridgeton, N.J., on Jan. 28, 1947. When he was three weeks old his family moved to Smyrna, Del., where his father had started a dairy farming business. Throughout his life, Mack was known for the hard work ethic that he developed at an early age working on the farm and during the construction of a portion of the farm that became Garrisons Lake Golf Club. After graduation from John Bassett Moore High School and Penn State University, he was the Golf Course Superintendent for the family owned golf club while also working with his father doing commercial seeding and landscaping. Mack married his "high school sweetheart", Carol, in 1965 and together they purchased the seeding business from his parents in 1976. In 1989, Carol started a concrete construction company, Curbs, Etc., Inc., and merged with the seeding operation, where Mack continued to work in sales, and as a field representative, truck driver, laborer, equipment operator, and anything else he was asked to do. Mack was preceded in death by his mother and father, Charles and Dorothy Ewing; and his sister, Nancy Gabel. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Charles M. Ewing III; his daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Matthew Reynolds; his grandson, Jackson Ewing Reynolds; his brother-in-law, Gary Emeigh and his wife Dee; his sister-in-law, Shirley Schilling and her husband Harry; nieces, Lisa, Michelle, Mary, Kristen, Shannon and Monica; and nephew, Gary. In addition to his immediate family, Mack is survived by cousins, Grace, Bonnie, Bobby, and Jim and numerous great cousins along with friends, James and Veronica Pletsch whom he considered family. Not only was Mack a devoted and loving husband and father, he was a friend to all that knew him. At any function he attended, people gravitated to be near him as he was usually the life of the party. He had a joke or story for everyone he met that always ended in a very loud and distinctive laugh. Mack was a man of integrity and honesty and always believed that business and life should operate on a handshake and a person's word. He was respectful to everyone but loved to pull pranks on anyone he could. When not working, he spent time crabbing and fishing, gardening, and vacations in Florida.
