Charles F. Gruwell Sr.

Gruwell, Sr., 85 SMYRNA - Charles F. Gruwell, Sr. passed away at Courtland Manor in Dover on Friday, July 26, 2013. Mr. Gruwell was born Nov. 19, 1927 in Henderson, Md., the son of the late Frank and Mary Gruwell. He served his country with honors in the U.S. Army during WWII. Charles was a member of the VFW Post #8801 and St. Polycarp's Catholic Church, both of Smyrna. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Gruwell; his son, Chuck Gruwell and his wife, Donna of Camden, Del.; three granddaughters, Ashlee Parker and her husband Matt, of Laurel, Del., and Allison and Jenna Gruwell, of Camden, Del.; and two great-grandsons, Brett and Will Parker. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 in St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, located at 135 Ransom Lane in Smyrna. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 am. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.
