LEWES — Kate Austin doesn’t like to think about Cape Henlopen High’s field hockey unbeaten streak.

But it’s all anybody wants to talk about with the Vikings coach.

“It’s not something that we think about but it’s always out there,” Austin said. “People come up to me at school, ‘How many games have you won now?’ I don’t know what it is, but people are always reminding us.”

For the record, that streak is now up to 65 games overall after a 1-0 victory over Polytech on Thursday night, behind a first-half goal from Sydney Ostroski.

The last time Cape Henlopen (12-0 this year) lost was Sept. 15, 2012 against Severna Park (Md.).

Its streak against Delaware opponents is now up to 79 games. The Vikings haven’t been defeated by an instate team since Sussex Tech beat them in the 2010 DIAA state tournament semifinals.

“It’s what pushes us along,” Ostroski said of the streak. “We just want everyone to see how good we are and how well we work together.”

“Everybody wants to be that first team to beat us,” Austin said.

Ostroski netted the lone goal nine minutes into the contest from a penalty corner. She had set up the corner with a steal in transition.

Tess Bernheimer had the assist, as she sent a low shot in front of the cage where Ostroski was waiting to get her stick on it to redirect.

“We practice that every day before practice,” Ostroski said. “We do a lot of tipping in practice. We try to get all the balls that Tess hits because she has an awesome shot.”

Polytech’s best scoring chance came when Jamie Trabaudo’s hard low shot from the top of the box was deflected by the pads of Cape goalie Riley Shields.

The Panthers only earned one penalty corner the entire game. That didn’t come until there were four minutes remaining.

The Vikings almost doubled their lead in the second half on a penalty stroke. But Polytech goalie Lauren Lee was able to dive to her right to deflect Bernheimer’s effort.

“That was awesome,” Polytech coach Lynn Richardson said. “I thought that was going to give us some momentum. That was a great save but when you only have one corner and a couple shots on goal it’s hard to win a game.

“Only giving one goal up was definitely a great effort by our defense and our goalie.”

The low-scoring game was expected by Austin. The Panthers lost to Cape by a goal last year during the regular season and also fell 3-1 to the Vikings in the state title game.

“They always play well against us,” Austin said. “We knew that goals would be hard to come.”

Cape Henlopen still has Milford, Woodbridge and Delmar left on its schedule to test the streak before the state tournament. Delmar also won on Thursday to stay unbeaten at 12-0-1 this year. The Wildcats will meet the Vikings on Nov. 3 at Delmar (3 p.m.).

Polytech dropped to 9-2 with both losses coming to the two undefeated teams (Cape and Delmar). The Panthers have four games left before the state tournament.

“We play in a great conference so we’re not overlooking anybody,” Richardson said. “We still have things we can work on. We haven’t peaked. Hopefully we can put it all together when it counts.”
