Canal erupted for six runs in the fourth inning before downing New York, 7-0, to stay alive in the Little League Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional this morning.

The Delaware state champions are now 1-1 in the six-team tournament being played in Bristol, Conn. They are slated to play again on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against either Washington, D.C. or Maryland.

Canal’s fourth-inning outburst was sparked by back-to-back doubles from Logan Waynick and Matthew Rice. Carter Schurman added an RBI single in the inning.

Brody Fleming, who pitched four innings, Aiden Collie and Jacob Trala combined to throw a three-hitter with four strikeouts and only one walk for Canal. Rice had three of Canal’s eight hits with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.

In the sixth, Rice hit a second double and scored n a sacrifice fly from Schurman (2 RBI).

Canal still needs to win two more games to reach the regional championship game, which is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. With no international teams playing in this year’s World Series because of the pandemic, the two finalists in each region earn a spot in the Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Only two teams from Delaware have ever reached the World Series in Little League’s division for 11-12 year olds.
