COACHES: Campbell — Mike Minter (43-60, 10th season); Delaware State — Rod Milstead (17-32, 5th season).
NATIONAL RANKING: Neither team is receiving votes in any poll.
LAST WEEK: Delaware State lost to Morgan State 37-27; Campbell lost to Gardner-Webb 42-35.
SERIES: First meeting.
KEYS TO THE GAME: The Hornets finished a disappointing MEAC slate last week at -2-3 in conference and now have the season finale against a nonconference opponent in Campbell. In order to get over the hump against the Camels, Delaware State will need to move the ball a lot better than it did last week against Morgan State when the Hornets were out-gained 225-81 in total yardage. The run game never got going as Delaware State averaged -0.1 yards per carry as the Hornets netted -5 rushing yards against the Bears. Most of that was due to poor offensive line play, holes were pretty nonexistent and it will be interesting to see if Marquis Gillis and Wade Inge could get back on track this week with some better blocking. ... QB might be a mystery again for the Hornets. C.J. Henry, who assumed the starter position a month into the season, left last week’s game with an injured clavicle. It meant that Delaware State was down to its fourth-string quarterback in Marqui Adams. If Henry is unable to go, the Hornet offensive struggles could continue. The good news for the Hornets though is part of the performance against Morgan State could be attributed to the flu bug going around the team. The Hornets should have had enough time to recover now. ... The Camels are also dealing with some injuries. Chad Mascoe completed 19-of-33 passes for 221 yards in relief of injured Campbell quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams in the Gardner-Webb contest a week ago. It remains to be seen who will start for the Camels Saturday. Campbell’s offense is led by running back Bryant Barr who is averaging 62.88 yards per game. Julian Hill is the top receiver with 634 yards and five touchdowns this year.
NOTES: This is the second Big South opponent Delaware State will play this season after Robert Morris who the Hornets defeated 14-9. The two teams have a pair of common opponents in Robert Morris and North Carolina Central. Campbell beat both teams, 41-10 and 48-18 respectively, while Delaware State lost to North Carolina Central 28-21. ... Campbell is winless on the road this year at 0-5. The Camels enter the game on a four-game losing streak. ... Campbell coach Mike Minter was a two-time national champion at Nebraska (1994 and 1995) where he played linebacker, free safety and strong safety for the Cornhuskers. He then played 10 years in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers.
