Camden-Wyoming rallies its way into Senior softball World Series

WORCESTER, Mass. — If this squad let falling behind bother it, its season would have ended a few weeks ago.

But the Camden-Wyoming Senior League softball all-stars seems to thrive on comebacks.

On Tuesday, Camden-Wyoming completed an impressive four-game run to capture the Senior East Regional title with a 10-4 victory over Pennsylvania in the championship game.

The championship sends the Delaware state champions back to its home state to play in the World Series at Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana. CW will be joined by District III champion Lower Sussex in the 10-team tournament in of Little League’s age division for 14-16 year olds.

The two Delaware squads will square off in the opener on Monday at 6 p.m.
Camden-Wyoming is just excited to be there after overcoming a 1-3 start in its first four regional games.

“Determination, they didn’t want to give up,” said CW manager Gary Kennard.
“They have a lot of heart,” he added. “They played together. They didn’t get down on each other. They had each other’s back. They just fought.”

Fittingly, CW had to rally in the championship game, too. It trailed 4-0 before erupting for eight runs in the third inning against Pensylvania.

Amiya Carpenter, Audrey Carroll, Keira Fendt and Alyssa Kennard all had doubles in the victory. Kennard was also the winning pitcher after striking out five.

On Tuesday morning, Camden-Wyoming trailed New Jersey, 12-5, before rallying for a 14-12 win. A grand slam home run from Ciara Maldonado helped CW get back in the contest.

“Me and the coaches looked at each other, we kind of thought we were out of it,” Kennard said about the seven-run deficit. “We said we needed to get our subs in. We brought our subs in and it sparked the fire to get it going. And they did not stop.”

On Monday, CW stayed alive in the regional with a 14-6 victory over New York and then a 10-7 victory over Connecticut. Carpenter had a triple against New York with pitcher Kyla Davis earning the win.

Playing in the World Series won’t be easy. But Camden-Wyoming’s goal all along was get this opportunity.

“They are stoked, they are very excited about it,” Kennard said about his players. “I haven’t really taken it in yet. I’ve even asked my daughter how she feels about it and she’s like, ‘Ask me tomorrow morning when it sinks in.’”

Kennard knows that making it to the World Series means a great deal to assistant coach Bryan Wilson, who has managed this group in past all-star seasons. Wilson wasn’t able to manage the team this summer.

“I said, ‘Hey, I’ll do it but really you are the manager,’” said Kennard. “He’s been waiting probably six years for this. It means a lot to him. It means a lot to me and our other coach, Xavier (Maldonado).”
