Posted

DOVER - Malik Smith, 26, of Camden-Wyoming, was arrested on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday morning, Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Police said that at approximately 10:56 a.m., a trooper on patrol observed a silver 2015 Mazda 3 traveling eastbound on Wyoming Avenue approaching South State Street. A computer check of the car’s registration showed that the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license and two active capiases, police said.

The trooper conducted a traffic stop on the Mazda and contacted the car owner and driver, identified as Mr. Smith, police said. The trooper, police said, smelled marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle, and Mr. Smith was taken into custody without incident.

A probable cause search of the Mazda led to the discovery of a concealed handgun and approximately 7.78 grams of marijuana, according to authorities.

Mr. Smith was charged with possession of a firearm while possessing a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and driving while suspended or revoked. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on his own recognizance.
