DOVER — An 88-year-old Camden man died and four other persons were injured in a three-vehicle collision Wednesday night, authorities said.

Richard Chappell was driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey that struck a 2004 Nissan Maxima that traveled directly into its path at the intersection of POW-MIA Parkway and Wyoming Mill Spur at approximately 5:06 p.m., Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said. Following the impact, the two vehicles traveled toward a 2017 Infinity QX80 that was then struck while approaching the intersection, police said.

Mr. Chappell, who police said was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus in Dover, where he died from his injuries.

An 86-year-old woman who was riding in the Honda Odyssey was also transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus with major injuries, police said. She was later airlifted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where police said she remained in serious condition.

A 20-year-old woman who was driving the Nissan Maxima suffered minor injuries, along with 15- and 17-year-old passengers. They were treated and released at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus.

The driver of the Infinity QX80 refused medical treatment, police said.
Sgt. Hoffman said investigation into the incident continues.
