DOVER — Dajaniel Smith, 29, of Camden, was arrested on felony assault and related charges following a Saturday incident on Peachtree Run, said Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell.

Around 7:30 Saturday morning, a 25-year-old female was walking down the road to her residence when a dark-colored sedan approached, police said. The suspect, later identified as Mr. Smith and as an acquaintance of the woman’s, got out of the vehicle and walked toward her, displaying a handgun, Cpl. Hatchell said, adding that the victim attempted to get away but was struck in the side of the head with the firearm.

After the incident, the woman was able to run to her residence, and the suspect fled in the vehicle, police said. The victim sustained injuries to her head and was treated at an area hospital.

Mr. Smith turned himself in to Troop 3 in Camden later Saturday and was charged with second-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and aggravated menacing — all felonies.

He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, Wilmington, on $40,000 cash bond.
