GREENWOOD - Calvin D. Smith, of Greenwood, was lost to us due to a tragic accident on Saturday, August 16, 2014, while doing what he loved, helping others. Calvin served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was born near Georgetown on December 29, 1929 to the late Raymond and Hannah Smith. Calvin worked for Delaware Electric Cooperative in Greenwood for 45 years. He was a member of VFW Post #7478 to which he volunteered, including working at the Greenwood BBQ. He was also a member of St. Johnstown UMC, Shanty Shakers Motor Home Club, and the Good Sam RV Club, recruiting enough members to earn a lifetime membership. Calvin was a volunteer for the Greenwood Cheer Center, delivering meals for over 19 years. He spent many hours cracking black walnuts on his homemade cracking device. This gave him and others with whom he shared his walnuts much joy. Calvin and his late wife Lorraine enjoyed many years of traveling around the country in their motor home, and many years fishing in the Delaware Bay and later in life on the Choptank River. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all, for his friendly smile and being extremely generous with his time in helping his friends, community, and family. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Lorraine Smith of 57 years; and two brothers, Ralph and Elwood. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce and his sister, Norma. Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., on Friday, August 22, 2014, at the St. Johnstown UMC, St. Johnstown Road, Greenwood, DE 19950. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity. Arrangements by Fleischauer Funeral Home of Greenwood.
