CAMDEN — A school bus that was stolen early Tuesday from the Fred Fifer III Middle School parking lot was located Wednesday, as the search for a suspect continued, authorities said.
According to Camden Police Chief Marcus Whitney on Wednesday morning, the bus was found in the Dover area after Caesar Rodney School District Transportation Supervisor Jason Bonner happened to drive by and see it parked.
Chief Whitney said surveillance video showed the district bus being stolen at around 3 Tuesday morning. Authorities determined the direction the bus traveled and obtained video from multiple locations.
The type of incident was a first for him, Chief Whitney said.
“While I can recall handling many school bus crashes, I’ve never had a case where a school bus was stolen,” he said. “After 23 years, this is something new for me.”
The investigation continues, Chief Whitney said.
At a school board meeting Tuesday evening, Superintendent Kevin Fitzgerald said that several Caesar Rodney school buses were broken into and vandalized, in addition to the bus that had been stolen.
“We ask anyone in the community that may be listening that, if they have any information whatsoever regarding the vandalism or the theft, to please contact the Camden police,” he said.
