CRISFIELD - C. Eugene Mills, 86, of Crisfield, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at McCready Memorial Hospital. Born in Crisfield on Dec. 9, 1924, he was a son of the late Benjamin Mills III and Elizabeth Lawson Mills. Mr. Mills was a graduate of Crisfield High School class of 1941, and Bliss Electrical School in Washington, D.C. He was also a Sgt. in the US Army who fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Germany during World War II. Mr. Mills was a retired plant manager of the former Carvel Hall in Crisfield working 44 years before his retirement in 1986. Very active in his community, he was a long-time member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield where he served as Secretary and Treasurer of Sunday School, Sunday School Superintendent, and the Board of Trustees; he served as President of the McCready Memorial Hospital Board during the time the new hospital was built; he was a 65-year member of the Crisfield Fire Department where he served as President, Assistant Chief, Assistant Chaplain, and was the department's oldest active member; he served as President of the Crisfield Kiwanis Club; he participated in the Lower Somerset County Ambulance and Rescue Squad Driver Program; he was a Little League Umpire for many years; he was active in the Crisfield AARP; and in 2003, he was a proud recipient of the Maryland's Most Beautiful Person award, honoring and recognizing his voluntarism and service to Crisfield and Somerset County. Mr. Mills also enjoyed duck carving, was a great handyman, and loved doing various types of repairs for people. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat Blades Mills of Crisfield; two children, Donna C. Sterling and her husband Steve of Crisfield and Leslie E. Mills and his wife Dawn of Uxbridge, Mass.; four grandchildren, Steve Sterling of Bowie, David Sterling of Reston, Va., Derek Mills of Los Angeles, Calif., and Caila Mills of Springfield, Mass.; a brother, William Gray Mills and his wife Betty of Leewood, Kan.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Don Blades and his wife Anne of Salisbury, Daniel Blades and his wife Maureen of Bowie, and Deanna Feeser and her husband Jim of Hanover, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Mills, and a brother, Benjamin Mills IV. A Firemen's Funeral officiated by The Revs. Steve Willing, G. Kim Gilson, and CFD Assistant Chaplain Steve Marshall was held Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield where friends called Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment with military honors will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be sent to Crisfield Fire Dept., P.O. Box 591, Immanuel U. M. Church Memorial Fund, c/o Robert Bradshaw, Jr., 306 W.
