DENTON, MD - Bruce Bryan Hansen of Denton, Maryland passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Easton Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. He was 57.
Bruce was born on February 27, 1961 in Dover, DE. He grew up in Goldsboro, MD on the family "farm" and attended the Benedictine School in Ridgely, MD for his elementary and high school years. Upon leaving there, he was a client at the Caroline Center in Ridgely, MD. During his time at the Caroline Center, he held several jobs. The one he was most proud of was woodworking at the Splinter Shop in Denton, MD. He also worked in the local parks, performed work on various contracts and janitorial services at the Caroline Center. Above all, he was part of and very proud of his family business, L&D Auto Supply and wore his L&D jacket proudly.
Words cannot describe our Bruce. Some may say he was "special" because he had Downs Syndrome but to those who knew him he was special for so many other reasons. Bruce touched the lives of everyone he met and stole a piece of their heart, each in their own way. He taught so many what it means to love unconditionally.
Bruce rode four wheelers and horses. He liked to bowl and fish. He earned many medals for Special Olympics through the years. He liked to read the newspaper and give the weather report. Bruce was caring, compassionate and loving. He could meet you once and know you years later. He was funny and could even be sarcastic. Bruce loved meatloaf, pepperoni pizza, peppermint patties, scrapple, chocolate ice cream and pudding and cream of mushroom soup. Most of all he loved his family and his smile could light a room.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Dottie Hansen; brother, Jim Hansen; and brother, David Hansen.
He is survived by his sister, Kathy Voshell of Cary, NC; brother, Jeff Hansen (Michele) of Magnolia, DE; sister-in-law, Carol Hansen of Felton, DE; sister-in-law, Connie Hansen of Sherwood, OR; nieces, Kristin Ward Thompson (Scott) of Rockville, MD, Stephanie Voshell Orihood (Josh) of Raleigh, NC, Erica Voshell of Durham, NC, and Haley Hansen of Magnolia, DE; nephews, Derek Ward of Magnolia, DE; David Hansen (Alfrima) of Felton, DE, Wilson Hansen of Chandler, AZ, Alec Hansen of Sherwood, OR, and Brandon Hansen of Felton, DE; great nieces and nephews, Connor, Chase, Caleb, Corinne, Maggie and Paul.
His extended family includes the staff and caregivers at the Caroline Center and best friends Chris, Randy and Lee. We are grateful to the caregivers who loved Bruce like family and who have extended their love to the family during his illness and subsequent passing.
Graveside services will be held at Oxford Cemetery, 220 N. 3rd St., Oxford, PA at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 2, 2019.
