Brengle's run comes to an end at U.S. Open

Madison Brengle fell in the third round of the U.S. Open on Friday afternoon to Estonian Anett Kontaveit in three sets.

Brengle, a Dover native, trailed after losing the first set 6-2 but rallied to take the second 6-3.

Kontaveit,  answered in the third however, winning 6-0 to advance to the fourth round. The 19-year-old will now play No. 23 Venus Williams for a berth in the quarterfinals. Williams upset No. 12 Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4.

It was only the second time Brengle (25) faced Kontaveit. The Estonian also beat here 6-1, 6-2 last June.

“I was trying to be aggressive and it definitely worked,” Kontaveit said. “I was really happy with the way I played and so happy to be through.”

If Brengle had won, it would've set up a rematch against Williams, who she lost to at Wimbledon this year. This was the furthest Brengle has ever advanced at the U.S. Open in her career. She has had a strong Grand Slam season, also making it to the fourth round of the Australian Open.
