PARIS — Madison Brengle opened the French Open with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu on Tuesday.

Brengle, the 32-year-old from Dover, needed one hour, four minutes to get through the match.

Brengle is ranked No. 57 in the world while Buzarnescu is No. 120.

The victory earned Brengle a second-round matchup with seventh-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. It’s the second straight year and third time in her career that Brengle has reached the second round of the Grand Slam tournament.

On Tuesday, Brengle was facing Buzarnescu for only the second time in her career and for the first time since 2018.

Buzarnescu hit 18 winners compared to three for Brengle but had 39 unforced errors compared to Bengle’s 13. Brengle broke serve three times in the first set, winning the final four games.

The second set was tied 2-2 before Brengle again reeled off the last four games to take the set and the match.

Brengle is 0-2 all-time against the 24-yeare-old Sabalenka.
