FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — Madison Brengle is one match away from the U.S. Open.

Brengle won her second round qualifier on Thursday, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 over Tereza Smitkova of the Czech Republic. Brengle won the final four games of the third set after it was tied 2-2.

The Dover native will face Anna Kalinskaya of Russia today with the winner qualifying to next week’s Grand Slam tournament. The match is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.

The two have never met in a WTA event but Kalinskaya did defeat Brengle in an ITF matchup a couple of weeks ago in Vancouver, 6-3, 6-4.

Brengle is seeking to qualify for the U.S. Open for the fifth-straight year. She has not missed qualifying for a Grand Slam event since Wimbledon in 2014.

Brengle pulled away in the first set against Smitkova after getting a break with the score tied 3-3. She won the next two games to take the set.

Smitkova was in control of the second, 5-2 before Brengle broke twice and took a 6-5 lead. Smitkova was able to rally and send the set to a tiebreaker, which she won 7-5.

Brengle went up 2-0 in the third set and had a chance to break to get to a 3-0 lead but Smitkova fought back to hold serve. Smitkova then broke Brengle to tie things up at 2-2 before Brengle reeled off four game wins in a row to end the match.
