LONDON - Dover's Madison Brengle opened her stay in Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-4 upset of No. 16 Marketa Vondrousova on Monday.
Vondrousova was coming off a run to the French Open finals.
After reaching Wimbledon's second round for the third straight year, Brengle is now 4-4 in the Grand Slam event.
Brengle, ranked 88th in the world, never trailed after winning the first two games in each set. In the first set, she won three of the last four games to pull away from a 3-3 tie.
In the second set, Brengle built a 5-2 advantage before finally closing out the match. Brengle had lost her only other career meeting with Vondrousova.
In her next match, Brengle will face the Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova, who is ranked No. 68.
