Blue Hens women's coach Adair leaves UD for Arizona State

Posted

NEWARK — Just two weeks ago, Natasha Adair pulled off her biggest accomplishment in her five seasons as Delaware women’s basketball coach.

She led the Blue Hens to the CAA Tournament title, getting Delaware back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

But that will also be Adair’s last big moment with the Hens.

On Sunday, Arizona State announced that it has hired Adair as its new women’s basketball head coach.

“From the moment I stepped onto campus, I knew this was the place for me to build and grow our women’s basketball program to a national power,” Adair said in a press release. “We truly have it all. I am committed to leading with character and passion, ensuring our student-athletes win on and off the court, graduate, and serve – the ‘Sun Devil Way’!

“ASU has a tradition of success, and me and my staff will work tirelessly to win.”

Adair finishes with a record of 95-58 at Delaware, with back-to-back 20-win seasons and a pair of appearances in the CAA Tournament finals. After losing to Drexel in the 2021 league title game, the Hens knocked off the top-seeded Dragons on their home court to win the CAA crown two weeks ago.

Last winter, the Hens reached the WNIT semifinals for the first time in program history.

Earlier this month, Adair was named to the Advancement of Blacks in Sports Women’s Basketball Black Coaches Watch List. Last year she was named CAA Coach of the Year.

“It’s been an honor to watch Natasha elevate the women’s basketball program to a nationally-recognized brand over the last five years,” Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak said in a statement.

“I am grateful to her for all that she has done for the University, Delaware Athletics and our Women’s Basketball program. It has been a true privilege to work with Natasha.”

“My time in Newark, Del. will always be cherished,” Adair said in a UD press release. “To my players, I love you all more than life.”

Adair, who also coached at Georgetown, Wake Forest and the College of Charleston. posted her 150th career win earlier this season.

With two-time CAA Player of the Year Jasmine Dickey already declaring for the WNBA Draft, the future of Delaware’s program is very much up in the air right now. The Hens relied on a handful of veteran players, some of whom could still return next season.

Adair will be Arizona State’s first new head coach in 25 seasons following the retirement of the program’s all-time winningest coach, Charli Turner Thorne.
