ELON, N.C. — Points weren’t always easy to come by on Thursday night.
By halftime, Delaware and Elon had combined to score just 43.
But the Blue Hens got their offense going enough in the second half to put away a 71-62 victory over the Phoenix in CAA men’s basketball at the Schar Center.
After netting just 25 first-half points, Delaware (9-5 CAA, 18-9 overall) scored 46 in the second half as it picked up the conference road win.
“I knew we were going to get into a good flow on the offensive end,” UD coach Martin Ingelsby said on his post-game radio interview on WDSD. “It wasn’t the prettiest of games — a little ugly, grinding, they were ready to play. But we made the plays we needed to. ... it was a really good road win for us.”
After the Hens led by 11 points early in the second half, Elon closed to within two a couple times midway through. Delaware, though, never led the Phoenix get any closer.
Eventually, the Hens pushed their advantage up to 12 points (63-51) with 1:29 remaining and 13 in the closing seconds.
In a contest in which Delaware started the night by making just 3-of-15 shots from the field, the Hens finished with four players in double figures.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. (17 points), Ryan Allen (13), Kevin Anderson (12) and Jyare Davis (11) all led the way. Nelson, who was coming off a career-high 30-point performance against James Madison on Monday, hit a pair of big three-pointers in the final seven minutes.
Davis also had 10 rebounds to record his second-straight double-double.
“It’s always a battle when we play these tough games,” said Davis. “But every day we’re going to go out there, give our best and try to get wins.”
The Hens trailed for only eight minutes in the game and not at all after halftime.
Defensively, Delaware held Elon to just 34.4-percent shooting (22-of-64) including only 4-of-22 shooting from three-point range.
