MIDDLETOWN — Residents have much to look forward to with the return of the MOT Little League Parade on April 23, the Memorial Day Parade on May 30 and the Middletown Olde-Tyme Peach Festival and Parade on Aug. 20.

For two years, each of these events has been canceled due to the pandemic, but the mayor and Town Council unanimously gave them the go-ahead Monday.

Additionally, since a conditional-use permit request for food trucks at MOT Little League was also approved Monday, the snack bar at the fields will soon be obsolete.

In other business, a preliminary major land-development plan for a Dash In convenience store and gas station at 405 Middletown Warwick Road was authorized, with its construction beginning soon.

The mayor and council are also adding property to Middletown’s map, annexing 504 Marl Pit Road. It is unclear what the future of that parcel holds, town leaders said.

Also Monday, council agreed to purchase three sludge-dewatering presses, to the tune of $1,597,000, as part of a slew of upgrades to a wastewater-treatment facility on Industrial Drive. The construction of a pole barn to store equipment was also approved, with the price tag of $409,600.

Two new council members were sworn in during the meeting. Last week’s election earned Craig Sherman and Bruce Orr, both previous Planning & Zoning Commission members, two open seats, while Councilman Jim Reynolds was reelected for his 17th term.

Mayor Kenneth Branner Jr. reappointed Councilman Reynolds as vice mayor and Councilman Drew Chas as treasurer. Councilman Reynolds will continue to oversee the Municipal Department, and Councilman Chas will continue to monitor the Electric Department. In addition, Councilman Jim Royston was reappointed to supervise the police department.

Councilman Aaron Blythe formerly oversaw the Maintenance Department but was moved to the Permits/Inspections Department until the next election. Councilman Orr is taking over as head of the Water/Wastewater Department, while Councilman Sherman will oversee the Maintenance Department.

Mayor Branner will remain in charge of the General Administration, Billing and Finance departments.
