Bidens visiting Rehoboth Beach Wednesday through Friday

Posted

REHOBOTH BEACH — The skies above the sandy Atlantic Ocean coastline are off-limits until late Friday morning.

With President Joe Biden arriving in town Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction to clear the area of winged, overhead traffic.

That means pilots pulling advertising banners for Ocean Aerial Ads Inc. can’t fly within 10 miles of Rehoboth Beach until late Friday morning, when the president departs.

Until then, the Ocean City, Maryland-based company’s aircraft are allowed to travel into the Bethany Beach area but no farther, said its owner, Bob Bunting.

Mr. Bunting said he was all right with the limitations, since he said the restriction could have been 30 miles if mandated by the U.S. Secret Service.

“We’ll lose a little business in Rehoboth Beach,” Mr. Bunting said. “It could be a lot worse, but I’m not complaining at all.”

So early Wednesday afternoon, an Ocean Aerial Ads aircraft made a couple passes over Rehoboth Beach before turning back south prior to the restriction becoming active. Typically, aircraft pull one to two banners a day past the beach on weekdays, Mr. Bunting said.

He added that he began working with the Secret Service on the FAA restrictions about a month ago to meet requirements for flying in the area. About $20,000 worth of new radio equipment was needed, so any aircraft could be tracked by Naval Air Station Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, where a flight plan was filed.

“We had to install radios, so they can see us all the time on radar,” Mr. Bunting said.

He described the current stretch as a “warmup” to peak season that runs from July 1 through Labor Day. While national advertising accounts are on the rise, he said local companies are limited due to a labor shortage.

The president — as well as first lady Jill Biden — arrived in Rehoboth Beach around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The couple will then depart the area Friday, according to the schedule. Ms. Biden’s 70th birthday is today.

The FAA posted notice of a TFR for the beach area, effective 5:45 p.m. Wednesday until 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Citing a “security event coordinated among local, state and federal authorities,” the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced Tuesday that the Gordons Pond parking area, pavilion, beach area and surf-fishing vehicle crossing at the southern end of Cape Henlopen State Park will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Through Friday, the southernmost portion of the Gordons Pond trail within the park also will be closed for intermittent periods, DNREC said.

Regarding any potential effects on traffic the president’s visit may have, Delaware Department of Transportation spokesman C.R. McLeod said DelDOT “works at the direction of state police and Secret Service in coordinating movements of the presidential motorcade.”

Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said, “In the event President Biden chooses to visit Delaware, the Delaware State Police will work in conjunction with the Secret Service to ensure the safety of his travels.

“Due to operational security, no details of the amount of troopers utilized will be provided.”

Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan declined comment and referred all questions to the White House press office.
