Biden Foundation event offers free training this week

DOVER — The Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children is hosting free Stewards of Children trainings on Wednesday in Georgetown and Thursday in Dover.

The training will help ensure that no child in Delaware or across the nation is threatened by an adult or peer predator.

The trainings support the foundation’s mission to prevent child abuse through educating adults and children, developing the next generation of child welfare professionals and strengthening child protection laws around the country.

The foundation was established in June 2015 as an operating non-profit to continue the late Mr. Biden’s commitment to protecting children, especially those who are victims of abuse and neglect.

In the aftermath of the prosecution of pedophile Earl Bradley, Biden, then Delaware’s attorney general, brought Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children to Delaware, pledging to train 5 percent of Delaware’s population (35,000 adults).

When Biden left office, 17,000 Delawareans had been trained in the program. The Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children aims to train an additional 18,000 adults.

“Beau Biden’s dream where all children are free to grow, learn and thrive can be a reality and Darkness to Light is proud to partner in offering Stewards of Children® child sexual abuse prevention training in Delaware,” said Dr. Lyndon Haviland, CEO of Darkness to Light. “Through our work, we have seen that training 5 percent of a population leads to stronger communities and safer children. We believe Delaware will be a model state for the prevention of child sexual abuse and encourage every adult to attend a Stewards of Children training.”

The free trainings will take place at Delaware Technical Community College’s Owens Campus at the Carter Partnership Center Lecture Hall at 21179 College Drive in Georgetown at 6 p.m. Wednesday and at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Delaware Technical Community College’s Terry Campus Corporate Training Center, Room 407, at 100 Campus Drive in Dover.
