Bicyclist dies in Rehoboth Beach crash

Posted

REHOBOTH BEACH — A 54-year-old Rehoboth Beach man died from injuries suffered when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle Sunday, Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

According to authorities, at approximately 7:23 p.m., a white 2013 Nissan Altima was traveling south on Coastal Highway, approaching the intersection of Rehoboth Avenue Extension. At the same time, the bicyclist was traveling east from the southbound shoulder of Coastal Highway into its southbound lanes.

For unknown reasons, Cpl. DeMalto said, the bicyclist entered the Altima’s lane, and the front of the car struck the left side of the bike, causing the victim to propel from his bicycle and land in the median. The driver fled the scene, but responding troopers located him and his car on Martin Street shortly afterward, he added.

The Altima’s driver, a 40-year-old Rehoboth Beach man, was not injured.

Police said the bicyclist was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identification is pending notification of kin.

The Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asked any witnesses to contact Master Cpl. K. Argo at 302-703-3264, send a message via the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
