CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Betty Jean Diaz of Chestertown, Md. died Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was 79 years old. Born in Chestertown, Md. on August 10, 1934, Mrs. Diaz was the daughter of the late Paul and Sarah Elizabeth Beck Walls. Growing up, she attended Chestertown High School. She had lived in Ridgely, Md. for many years, but for the last two years she had, again, lived in Chestertown. Mrs. Diaz was a prodigy when it came to music, not only did she learn to play many different instruments, she also began teaching when she was very young. She also taught music in the Chestertown High School in the late 1960's and started the high school's first choral group. She sang and performed in various night clubs along the east coast, such as in Maryland, Delaware, and New York. Mrs. Diaz was well-known for her ability to yodel which was always a request by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by four brothers, P. Richard Walls, William J. Walls, James G. Walls, and Charles Stare; and one sister, Doris Mae Hadaway. Mrs. Diaz is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, George Diaz of Chestertown; three sons, Daniel Bentrup of Knoxville, Tenn, Stephan Bentrup of New Mexico, Leslie Smith Jr. of Ohio; one daughter, Evon Thornton of Chestertown; one sister, Nancy Manley of Harrington, Del.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Walls of Hillsboro, Md.; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The arrangements are by Moore Funeral Home, P.A. in Denton, Md.. If friends wish to send donations in Mrs. Diaz's memory, the family suggests sending them to the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Ste. D, Timonium, MD 21093.
